School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship Information Session

On Tuesday 30th June, Career Links coordinated the annual School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) information event.  Attendance at this event has grown strongly each year, with this year’s event attracting over 400 parents and their Year 10 students keen to find out whether a School Based Apprenticeship or School Based Traineeship is the right choice for them as part of the Higher School Certificate.

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships allow students to start a career while they complete the Higher School Certificate (HSC).  Students are able to work in paid employment for one day per week while studying the related vocational course as an HSC subject.

School Based Traineeships are undertaken for 2 years and are completed at the end of the HSC. School Based Apprenticeships are undertaken for 5 years:  2 years during the HSC and 3 years full-time after completion of the HSC.

Career Links provided attendees at the information night with an in depth presentation that covered how SBATs work, how they fit into the Higher School Certificate, and how students can market themselves to a potential employer.

Animal Care School Based Trainee, Maddi Brownell-Massie spoke passionately about her experience as an SBT with Blackbutt Reserve (Newcastle City Council), which was a highlight for the students and parents.

Many students were inspired by Maddi’s account of how she took the initiative to get herself a School Based Traineeship by volunteering for many months prior to being appointed.  She spoke of the commitment and time management required to be successful with the SBT and completion of the HSC.

At the conclusion of the main presentation, parents and students had the opportunity to speak directly with representatives from Registered Training Organisations, Group Training Organisations, Australian Apprenticeship Centres, State Training Services, Trade Schools, and Career Links.

Year 10 students who wish to pursue a SBAT are now encouraged to speak with their Career Advisor to ensure they have chosen and applied for the appropriate VET/TVET subject and to submit an Expression of Interest with Career Links.
