Leroy Wilkinson, Year 12

Name the School Based Traineeship (SBT) you are completing?

A Certificate II School Based Traineeship in Business Services (employed through the Aboriginal Employment Strategy) working with the Commonwealth Bank, Cardiff .

What school do you attend?

Cardiff High School. My Business Services training is through school.

How did you get started in a School Based Traineeship?

I applied for the SBT through school. I was selected to attend an interview with the Cardiff Branch Manager and another Branch Manager (which is what all potential staff have to do) . I was successful in my interview for a position at Cardiff.

How have you coped balancing Year 11 Preliminary studies with your SBT?

I have coped better that I thought I would, completing both my HSC and my SBT. I elecetd to work on a Wednesday as I have the least number of lessons on at school that day. This reduced the work load that I have to catch up on.

Describe a day on the job.

A day on the job for me starts at 8am. My day involes a routine of safe work practices, including: telling, meeting sales targets and keeping up to date with current bank policies and complying with these. My job allows me to serve my customers; delivering excellent customer service and identifying needs for the customer that will improve their financial profile and business relations in the future. My business day finishes at 4pm, but once the door closes I am still busy completing tasks. This usually takes another 45 minutes.

What is the best part about your SBT?

The best part about completing a School Based Traineeship is that it allows you the opportunity to gain practical on the job experience in an industry that you may not be able to enter into while you are still at school. It provides you 2 years of experience which may lead to future employment and looks very good on your resume. Most employers will be very impressed if they see that you have managed to juggle a SBT with HSC studies. The SBT has given me a new understanding of the workplace and the financial services industry.

Is there anything you don't enjoy about the SBT?

There is sincerely nothing I don't enjoy about the SBT. It has provided me with so much experience, life skills and has helped me to mature as a senior member of the telling line at 18. However, you must be a hard worker and dedicated to the role you are selecting. You need to be resilient and most of all choose to enjoy the 2 year, once in a lifetime opportunity.

Would you recommend School Based Traineeships to others?

I would absolutely reccomend SBT's to friends and family as I have been given such an amazing opportunity and I have used it to my advantage. I encourage others to do the same while they can.

What are your career plans after you finish school?

My career plans after I complete my HSC is to further my career in the Commonwealth Bank, further advancing my role and developing my skills. Another option I am considering is to attend university, studying nutrition and dietetics, which is something I'd also like to pursue. I have some big decisions to make in the near future.
