What is a Vocational Education and Training Scholarship?

An amount of money or a grant to a student to support study and training in a specific industry area throughout years 11 and 12. Scholarships are available to selected students only based on merit or some other rational criteria

 

What are the benefits to my organisation?

How does this differ from a School Based Traineeship?

  • There is no contract or training plan and therefore no contractual obligations to state training authorities.
  • The amount of time spent with the employer is significantly shorter (approximately 9 weeks over 2 years).

What financial benefits does the student receive over the two years?

 The employer determines the value of the scholarship.
 
 
 

What incentives are there from the government?

 There are no government incentives to employer to support scholarship students.
 
 
 

How are the students selected?

By application, competitive cull (involving an industry representative), interview with potential employer and a trial work experience after completion of the Year 10 School Certificate.
 
 
 

What do the students get out of the Scholarship?

              HSC & a potential UAI (if desired).
              A relevant Certificate II qualification (upon successful completion).
·         Progress funding whilst training.
·         Actively participate in the workplace and an opportunity to gain valuable and transferable employability skills.
·         Become familiar with the workplace, the employees and the systems and procedures of your organisation.
·         An employer mentor.
 
 
 

What are employers expected to provide?

  Supervised and planned work placement for the successful students.
Students will be required to participate in work placement during school holiday periods, as negotiated withyou. (Minimum additional 100 hours over two years).
  • Any uniform and Personal Protective Equipment required.
 
 

Are employers covered for accident and insurance and indemnities?

 Insurance and indemnity arrangements are covered by the NSW Government Treasury Managed Fund Scheme.
 
The scheme provides insurance for most NSW Government Agencies. Specific cover is afforded for DET and TAFE NSW under the terms and conditions of the Miscellaneous Insurance Policy. However you are expected to have current public liability coverage and follow State OH&S legislative requirements as is standard business practice.
