This innovative program ran over an eight week period, and involved staff members from Hawkins Masonic Village (HMV) visiting West Wallsend High School to undergo computer-based training developed and delivered by members of the Year 11 Information Technology class.
Tuition for the HMV staff included guided instruction in:
• Word processing – basic functions, creation of mail merged documents and tables
• Spreadsheet skills including formulas, formatting, creation of charts
• Internet and email skills such as the creation of signatures and attaching files.
In addition to tuition at West Wallsend High School, the students visited HMV on a number of occasions to gain an understanding of how these skills apply to the day-to-day duties in a real workplace.
The students at West Wallsend High School intend to maintain close contact with the staff at HMV and continue to provide IT support. The HMV staff will be able to email the school with a problem and the request will be logged and assigned to a student to develop a solution. The student will then contact the client via phone or email to guide them through the solution.
The staff and students at West Wallsend High School would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Hawkins Masonic Village for their involvement and support of this program. The students have found it to be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience.
Much credit must go to Leigh Killian from Career Links for developing the concept and organising the student client partnership, which we hope will continue on into 2009
