Engineers Australia Green Card Project

Students from six local high schools will obtain their OH&S Green Card thanks to a partnership between Career Links, Engineers Australia, HunterNet and the University of Newcastle.

The Newcastle Division of the Engineers Australia wanted to promote engineering in local high schools. Particular schools were targeted based on University intakes for Year 10 Students who have an interest in engineering, will be undertaking work experience with an engineering based company and will continue on to Years 11 & 12. Students were required to have an interest in Engineering and to have a high level of maths.

Career Advisors culled students to ensure the best group for the project was identified. The successful students heard talks by Engineers Australia members and attended the OH&S course to obtain their Certificate.

As well as the Green Card, the programme also assisted linking students with companies offering work experience placements. Having a Green Card enabled the students to escape from the office and have the option of visiting construction sites and workshops.

Students came from Merewether High School, Whitebridge High School, St Mary’s High School, St Pius X High School, San Clemente High School and Cardiff High School.

Students gained insightful career path information and current Industry knowledge about the Engineering Industry from members of Engineers Australia who were guest speakers on the day. Engineers Australia has committed to continuing this programme in 2009.
