What are School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships?

You may have an opportunity to complete your HSC and a School Based Apprenticeship or School Based Traineeship (SBAT) at the same time. SBATs are available in a number of subject areas. They allow you to work part time with an employer, whilst completing your HSC and the formal training required to achieve a Certificate II, III or IV in the course you are studying.

If you are already working part time you are encouraged to speak with your employer about converting your casual work into a SBAT, if you would like to gain a formal qualification in that area. You, your parents and your employer will be required to sign a formal training contract for the duration of Year 11 and Year 12. Some School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships can even count towards a UAI, if you sit for the HSC exam.

A School Based Traineeship (SBT) combines “off the job” and “on the job” training.

A School Based Traineeship will commence after the School Certificate has been completed and must be completed by 31st December following the Higher School Certificate. Although the on-the-job training can start just after the School Certificate, the off-the job (or formal) training will be completed during Years 11 and 12.
The “on the job” training component will be undertaken in the workplace for an average of one day a week during school terms plus half of all school holidays. Depending on your study schedule you may work during school, after school, on weekends and in school holidays. In most SBT’s, a minimum of 100 days will be spent on the job during the traineeship.

The “off the job” training is completed at school or TAFE, or with an approved Private Training Provider. All “off the job” training counts towards your HSC. Most Certificate II courses are 240-300 hours.

School Based Trainees must have…

  1. Paid work under an appropriate industrial arrangement.
  2. A training contract signed by the employer and trainee, and approved by the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET).
  3. A training plan that meets the requirements of the HSC and the relevant Vocational Training Order (VTO).

What is the difference between School Based Apprenticeships and School Based Traineeships?

School Based Apprenticeships are completed over 5 years. This means that you will commence your apprenticeship in Year 11 and at the end of Year 12 when you have successfully completed your HSC, you will have also completed the 1st year of your apprenticeship. After Year 12 you will move into the 2nd year of your apprenticeship, which will continue for another 3 years.

School Based Traineeships are completed over 2 years. This means you will start your traineeship in Year 11 and at the end of Year 12 you will have successfully completed your HSC and your traineeship. After Year 12 you may* move into the 2nd year of an apprenticeship, which will continue for another 3 years (* subject to availability).
