“Kids Try-a-Trade” is a pilot program encouraging year 6 students to test out different trades with the key element being the involvement of a family member. This year it will include primary schools in the Windale, Gateshead, Belmont and Swansea areas.
The event will be staged by Career Links, TAFE World Skills, the Men’s Shed and local employers. “Kids Try A Trade” will accommodate 600 students over 2 x 2 hour sessions, each session will include 300 students per session.
It has been shown that Career Awareness starts at home by communicating with family members and friends. Students who attend the “Kids Try A Trade” will need to be accompanied by an adult who is significant in their life.
Over the two hours, each student will participate in categories they are interested in learning about. Each student will be supplied a “Kids Try a Trade Passport” and as the student completes the activity they get their passport stamped.
Students will also be encouraged to dress in a career related costume with a $50 gift voucher being given for the best costume at each session.
Before the day we encourage the teacher of each class involved to help students learn about different trades and develop a list of questions they might want to ask the presenters. Afterwards students could compile a report, including elements such as photos, quotations, brochures and the things they liked best about the different categories they tried.
