Whether you’re a local business looking to employ a young person, or a local young person looking to start your career; Career Links GT can help!
Career Links Group Training (Career Links GT) employs School Based Apprentices and Trainees (SBATs) and places them with host employers. We help our host employer save time and money by reducing employment risks and responsibilities; while our Apprentices and Trainees benefit from consistent support and quality employment and training.
Career Links GT is an innovative local initiative focused on supporting an engaged and skilled future workforce through the recruitment of SBATs. Career Links is a community focused, not-for-profit organisation that has been operating in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie for over 10 years. The GT division was launched by Career Links after the organisation identifIed significant opportunities for growth in the area of SBATs in our region, and across the State.
SBATs require a careful balance between industry, school and community and, as a result, employing an SBAT can be perceived as a complicated process by some businesses. But it doesn’t have to be! Career Links GT makes the process easy for all parties involved including the student, the employer and the training provider. We support you to support our youth.
Career Links GT works with organisations of all sizes across a range of industries. Our staff have significant experience in the education, training and employment fields and are focused on recruiting local young people as SBATs and placing them with host employers.

Group Training was introduced by the Government in the 1980’s when many employers wanted to employ Apprentices and Trainees but were unsure if they would be able to provide work for the duration of the Apprenticeship or Traineeship. As a result young staff were often let go before completing their training and without sufficient on-the-job skills. Group Training was introduced to solve some of these problems and ensure that Apprentices and Trainees were receiving the additional care and support necessary to achieve the successful completion of their training contract.
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) allow students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to undertake paid part time work and formal industry training, while continuing to study for their Higher School Certificate (HSC). SBATs are a great way for students to get a head start in their career and provide a low cost and effective way for employers to prepare a young person for a future career in their industry.
SBATs combine both off the job and on the job training. The off the job (or formal) training is normally completed during Years 11 and 12 at school, TAFE or with a private training provider. The on the job component of an SBAT will normally include an average of one day per week within the workplace, however, additional work during school holiday periods may be required. For most SBATs, a minimum of 100 days will be spent on the job over two years.
